Emory takes 3rd Place in Punt, Pass, Kick!

An update on Paper Style owner's neice Emory! Before the finals, the NFL organizers told all of the kids, 'Regardless of the outcome, ALL of you winners just being here.' We couldn't agree more. The contest started several months ago with some 500,000 kids participating. Emory made it to the Top 40 in the country. Way to go Emory... we're all super proud of you!

Dragon*Con invades Atlanta... Andrew was there!

Dragon*Con is the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe! This year, just over 60,000 fans, guests and volunteers attended the 25th annual event over Labor Day weekend in Downtown Atlanta.

Andrew has attended each year for the last 13 years, and each year he talks someone else in the office into attending the parade that marches through a mile of Downtown Atlanta in costumes or coming down to visit for part of the weekend. We all enjoy bits and pieces of the excitement, from checking out the costumes to playing games and meeting actors, artists and authors. Here are a few of the photos that Andrew had taken this year:

Andrew with Felicia Day - Andrew volunteers as part of the Dragon*Con Security staff, in the Operations department. One of the perks is the opportunity to meet some of the guests in a casual setting. Here he is backstage with Felicia Day, most popular for her work in TV shows “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Eureka”, and “The Guild”; as well as the immensely popular Joss Whedon production “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog”.

Little guys even like Dragon*Con - Little Captain America - Many people enjoy creating a costume to wear of one of their favorite pop culture icons, and the excitement is always best to see a little kiddo wearing their costume and enjoying seeing all the other neat costumes. It’s also a great opportunity to start making plans for your Halloween party.

What do you do at Paper Style? My job consist of a bunch of things! I buy for Paper Style, I manage the designers and I do whatever needs to be done!

What do you do when you're not at Paper Style? Tennis was a very important part of my life that I enjoyed but now that I’m a mother of a 5 year old most of my time goes to him!

What's your proudest Paper Style moment? The day I started!!! I love my job and I enjoy everyone that works here.

First Day of Kindergarten!

Susan, our Typsetting Dept. Chief, recently attended her first Nascar Race in Kentucky. What made it even more special is that her husband Chris, a professional photographer, allowed them access in ALL areas. Here are some of the great pictures from that race!

Ireland Semester Abroad for Andrew!

Long time Paper Styler Andrew just returned from his second-to-last semester of school. We loved hearing all that he did and wanted to share with you some of the highlights!

What do you do at Paper Style? I manage the shipping department where we package Paper Style products and ship them out to our customers.

How long have you been working at Paper Style? 4 1/2 years.

What do you do when you're not at Paper Style? I am a musician and budding filmmaker. (See video below that Drew recently made of his very interesting neighborhood!)

What's your proudest Paper Style moment? It's hard to narrow down a specific moment but I am constantly overwhelmed and proud of the quality of our products and hard work that goes into creating those products every day. I am proud to be part of such a great family of coworkers that cares so much about who we serve as well as each other.

Long time Paper Styler Deborah and her family had great reason to celebrate as her oldest daughter Ashley was married in Atlanta! They chose traditional invitations from Crane and Co. Our heartfelt thank you to all the men and women who have served and given their lives in service to their country.

On Memorial Day the flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.

The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

Strike!

Last night, some of the Paper Style crew went to the local bowling alley for a few games of bowling!
We're a "slightly competitive" group of people. Each Strike was cheered (sometimes with a little victory dance or pirouette) and each time that one elusive pin still stood the cries of "you were robbed!" or "I think that one is glued" were heard.

Boyd managed to bring in the high score for the men with a 170, after 5 strikes in a row! Terri lead the ladies with 131. We had a lot of fun, and after last night - a few of us might just start a team!

Puerto Vallarta Wedding!

My wife Lindsay and I were just in Mexico for our dear friends Tammy and Linnette's wedding. What an amazing week and celebration... We wish them our very best! - Chris

The wedding guests took over the super cool, all inclusive resort Playa Fiesta just outside of the city. As a dog lover, I snapped a shot of one of the two dogs that belong to the owners Adam and Lindsay from San Francisco.

The center piece of the property was their mosaic pool where we pretty much spent all day. And the sunsets are as good as it gets!

The welcome party was held at La Bodeguita Del Medio in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Yes, there was plenty of tequila... It was quite a welcome! The next day we noticed a sand-art contest where the Mayan Calendar piece really caught our eyes. The detail was amazing. They spray it with water periodically so it doesn't fall apart!

In our burlap welcome bags, we received a personal letter and rock with a word painted on that represented us (part of the beach on the property has thousands of rocks that washed up during a hurricane sometime ago). In return, at the reception, we were asked to do the same for the couple and place them in glass jars... "A single rock represents strength, but with lots of rocks and mortar, you can build a fortress!" How true and what a cool idea. And the printed cocktail napkins were a great touch!

....and now for something completely different!

A True Family Business!

We're not quite a teen-ager, but we will be turning twelve in the Fall! We thought it might be fun to tell you a little about who we are.

Paper Style is led by three siblings: Chris, Scott and Diane. And if you think our paper story ends there, it doesn't. Our mother and father were in retail packaging and our other two brothers and sisters are also in retail. All together, 6 kids, all in retail/printing and we all live in Atlanta... not too far from mom and dad!

We are lucky to have a great team of folks who help us make Paper Style what we think is a pretty cool place. We'll be featuring members of our team throughout the year, so if you want to know more, check back each week for updates! Oh, and in case you were wondering... Chris is on the left, Scott in the middle and Diane on the right!

We love Azaleas but we miss Meadow!

It's been right at two years since my best friend was taken from me.

At the age of 7, Meadow developed in-operable cancer. She was as pretty as any golden retriever and was behind the scenes everyday at Paper Style. As a puppy, her breeder named all of the litter by color-coded collars until owners were chosen. Meadow was called 'pink-girl.' So in her honor, I planted white and pink azaleas behind the office which are growing and now in full bloom.

We no longer have her sweet smile, wagging tail and high-pitched whimper, but we will always have beautiful azaleas to remind us of her joy.- Chris

Graduation Announcement Tips

A graduation is a milestone event in a person's life. Announce the achievement to family and friends with stylish graduation announcements from Paper Style. Whether it is a high school or college diploma that has been earned, we have got just the card to match your style! Here are a few tips for your graduation announcements.

Include all the pertinent information-and some fun info too. You'll want to note the commencement ceremony details (when and where your child graduated), the class name and the school attended, and any honors the student received, such as GPA or other ranking and any clubs, sports, or activities. If your student has decided on a college, you might mention that as well. The wording for a high school graduation should be fun and upbeat-remember it's for a young adult who has just achieved something momentous!

Add a photo of the graduate. Photo graduation announcements are the most personal of all, and you have so many options in terms of what photo to use. When picking a photo, make sure it's a shot the graduate likes, that it captures her style and personality, and then it clearly depicts her (a blurry photo of her running down the court in a basketball game is not the right shot for an announcement!). You can use a photo of her participating in a school-related activity, or in her cap and gown at the graduation ceremony, or laughing with her friends at a graduation party. If you happen to have a photo of your child when she started high school, consider placing that side by side with a shot of her graduating-friends and family will get a kick out of seeing how she's changed and grown!

Mail out the announcement in a timely manner. Invitations to high school commencement ceremonies come in short supply, so only a few of your closest family or friends will be able to attend the event. A high school graduation announcement that comes on the heels of the ceremony will be more likely to catch the recipient's attention-which will mean more recognition for your graduate. You want the announcement to feel like news, so don't wait too long after the ceremony to send it out. Design the announcement in advance of the graduation and then save it online; you can return to your saved design once you have a good photo, drop it in, and then order the announcements all in a few minutes. Make sure to have your list of addresses handy so the announcements can go out within a day or two of receiving them from the printer.

Don't mention gifts. A high school graduation is traditionally an opportunity for friends and family to send gifts in congratulation, so mentioning this, or where to send them, is unnecessary and untoward. Leave it out of your announcement and trust that your graduating child will get all he or she deserves!

Include a personal touch. With so many options for graduation announcements, you might not know where to start. Why not get the grad's input? Ask her what she likes and how she'd like to announce her graduation. It will let her know how important this moment is, and it will be a great way for you to spend time together before she heads off for college or other adventures. Also think about the school your graduate is leaving and the one he's heading to: add a personalized touch by incorporating the school mascot, a school motto, or a favorite cheer into the design. School colors-either of the school where he's spent the past four years or the college he'll soon be attending-is another great way to make the announcement unique to your grad, and something he may even want to save!

High school graduation announcements can be a special way of celebrating your child for her accomplishments and sharing a milestone event with people who know and love your child as you do. You can also coordinate a graduation announcement with a graduation party or open house invitation, or combine the two to serve a dual purpose. The options are endless!

Your Bridal Shower: Start To Finish

One of the best ways to make your shower a success is to tie it together with a theme. For Emily’s Bridal Shower, the invitation was the inspiration for the theme. Shown here is item 109-IN-096 (Glamour Girl Bride Blonde Shower Invitations).

(Left) Using the blue, brown and white color patterns from the invitation, the centerpiece was accessorized with a blue and brown dotted ribbon. Large “diamond” baubles were strewn across the table for a little extra flair.

(Right) As a token of appreciation for the guests at the shower, each guest received a Love Measuring Spoon, in a brown box. The gift was tied together with blue and brown ribbon along with a bag of personalized M&M’s. They were placed on a light blue place setting with brown napkins.

(Below) The cake… is a masterpiece. The cake was made by a local bakery, who applied the blue accents to the white frosted cake. An old doll couch was painted black, with the blue and white gifts created out of paper. Using a Barbie doll with wedding gown accessories and black sunglasses, the cake recreated the invitation design theme. It was displayed next to the invitation that the guests received in the mail.

A little creativity in the planning will ensure that your guests will be discussing the shower or party with all their friends! Be careful though! If you do a really good job, you might become the official party planner!

Tailgate Party Recipes!

Now that you’ve planned your kick off party, it’s time to start prepping your table!
Here are a few easy party recipes from the Paper Style Kitchen!

Nutrient-Rich Fiesta Salad
Great for a healthy alternative to dips and heavy snacks!

Ingredients:
2 cups brown rice
1 8-oz can of corn, rinsed and drained
1 red pepper, chopped
2-3 green onions, chopped
¾ cup dried cranberries
1 carrot, grated
3 tbs fresh parsley
1 clove garlic, crushed or minced
4 tbs low-sodium soy sauce
2 tbs lemon juice
½ cup olive oil
¼ cup roasted slivered almonds
¼ cup roasted sunflower seeds
Ground black pepper to taste

Directions:
1. In a large bowl combine rice, corn, red pepper, onions, cranberries, carrot and parsley.
2. In a separate bowl blend garlic, soy sauce, lemon juice and olive oil.
3. Pour olive oil mixture over salad to evenly coat. Add roasted nuts, sunflower seeds and black pepper to taste.

Sausage and Cheese Dip
This is an office favorite, and does not often last very long! Consider making two batches - one to share and one for yourself!

Ingredients:
1 Cream Cheese package – 8 oz.
1 can of Hot Ro-tel
1 pack of Jimmy Dean Hot Sausage
1 bag of Scoop Fritos

Directions:
Brown sausage in a skillet and drain. In a crock-pot or separate bowl, mix cream cheese, Ro-tel and sausage. Mix together until cheese is melted.
Best served warm. Small crock-pot works best.

*If guests like things mild, substitute a regular can of ro-tel and regular sausage.

Creamy Guacamole
Very easy to make, done in 5 minutes and ready to eat! Great for an on the spot entertainment snack! Good for about 3 cups of goodness!

Ingredients:
3 avocados
2 tablespoons of lemon juice(or about half a lemon if you have it fresh)
3 tablespoons (1/4 of a medium onion) finely diced onion
¾ teaspoons salt
3 ¼ teaspoons olive oil

Directions:
Cut the avocados in half, remove the seeds and scrape the pulp into a mixing bowl. Use a fork to mash the avocado. Stir in lemon juice, onion, salt, and olive oil. I’d recommend putting it in the fridge to chill for about 30-45 minutes. If you just can’t wait any longer, you’re ready to serve. (It rarely makes it to the fridge at my house!)

Not Yo’ Mama’s Banana Pudding
Great presentation, and excellent for that sweet tooth!

Ingredients:
2 bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies
6 to 8 bananas, sliced
2 cups milk
1 (5 ounce) box instant French Vanilla pudding
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping – thawed, or equal amount sweetened whipped cream

Directions:
Line the bottom of a 13 by 9 by 2-inch glass dish with 1 bag of cookies and layer bananas on top.
In a bowl, combine the milk and pudding mix and blend well using a handheld electric mixer. Using another bowl, combine the cream cheese and condensed milk together and mix until smooth. Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Add the cream cheese mixture to the pudding mixture and stir until well blended. Pour the mixture over the cookies and bananas and cover with the remaining cookies. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes a great presentation! Originally a Paula Dean recipe.

Saying Goodbye...

One month ago today, I lost a very loyal friend and Paper Style lost a very loyal employee. My golden retriever Meadow lost a battle with cancer.

The reason I felt obligated to include this in our blog is that Meadow came to Paper Style with dad every day of her life, including weekends. She was raised here, considered it her home and loved it more than anything. She couldn't wait to go to work each day.

After being diagnosed with inoperable cancer, word spread quickly that Meadow may not be with us much longer. We had a party for her, took pictures, gave her all the love we could... we celebrated Meadow. I spent the night with her on Thursday at the office, on the floor and pet her all night long letting her know what a pretty girl she was. I'm not sure either one of us slept.

The joy Meadow brought the entire Paper Style Family... and especially me, will always be cherished and never forgotten.

We'll miss you sweet girl.

For those not lucky enough ta be born Irish, it's ok. We'll let ye pretend!
But if ye plan on being Irish today, ye have ta know what yer sayin' and why yer doin' it!
Listen up for a quick Irish crash course.

Erin go Bragh (air-inn-guh-braw) - is the English spelling of the original Gaelic term. It's used to express allegiance to Ireland. Often translated "Ireland Forever".

Sláinte (slaan-cher) {Editor's note: One of my favorite terms based on pronunciation. Think "It's a lawn chair" quickly spoken.} - This is a common quick toast, meaning "Good Health" in Gaelic. I'll raise a pint to that!

Now, for a little common English in Ireland!

How are you? - Unless the person asking you is a doctor, nurse or paramedic this simply means "Hello!" Do not start any long sentences. Just reply with the same phrase or the common "And yourself?

Good man yourself! - A phrase denoting agreement or thanks and a bit of respect. Also used as a sort of non-sequitur reply to the ubiquitous greeting "A'right?" or "How are you?"

Yes and No - Irish does not really have a definite "yes", neither a final "no". This explains the abhorrence with which the use of these words is treated. They are avoided as far as possible. Only if pressed a clear answer might be given - the implication always being that both "yes" and "no" are in a state of flux and synonymous with "well, maybe, we'll see".

About St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the Irish. He was born about 389 A.D. in Northern Wales, which at that time may have been part of England or Scotland.
Saint Patrick had an adventurous life. He was captured by pirates at the age of 16. The Irish pirates brought him to Ireland to tend the flocks of a chieftain in Ulster. Six years of slavery made him a devoted Christian. He escaped to France and became a monk. In 432, a vision led him to return to Ireland as a missionary bishop. He brought Christianity to Ireland and taught there for 29 years. He used the shamrock, a 3 leaf clover, (Ireland's national flower) to explain the Blessed Trinity. St. Patrick founded 365 churches, baptized over 120,000 people and consecrated 450 bishops.
Many tales sprung up about this popular saint. One of the most popular legends was how he charmed all the snakes of Ireland down to the seashore to be drowned by the water. The only certain writings of St. Patrick's are his Confessions and a letter written to a man named Coroticus (See Tripartite Life of St. Patrick by Stokes and Lives by Todd, Healy, Bury and Lusack.). His Confessions are written in crude Latin.
According to some Irish writings, St. Patrick died on March 17, 461 A.D. The anniversary of his death is celebrated as St. Patrick's Day. It's interesting to note that the shamrock clover flowers around that time of year.
The first official celebration of St. Patrick's Day in the United States occurred in Morristown, New Jersey in 1780. It was authorized by George Washington. James Bond: Quantum of Solace opens Thursday, November 14th at Midnight in theaters across America. For Bond fans, you know the stories. For those who are just getting aquainted with the infamous Secret Agent, this is the 22nd movie, and the 6th actor to portray 007 on the big screen.

I saw an invitation today that gave me a great idea!

The dots on this invitation remind me of the opening credits for the 007 movies. I think that a Secret Agent Party would be a great theme for a birthday party! Here is a sample layout!

It was said that he wanted to be the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral.

If I place my order today, how soon can I get it?

There are a lot of factors here. Is your order being printed by us, or did you request it blank to print yourself? What is the shipping method you chose? Is there a national holiday that might delay shipping?

Blank orders typically ship out in 1-2 business days, but we ask that you give us 3 business days prior to shipping if possible.

If your order is being printed by us, it is all dependent on how soon your order is approved by you. An e-Proof is posted to your account at http://www.paperstyle.com/ within 1 business day of placing your order. Once you have viewed your Proof(s) and made any necessary changes and/or approved your order, it goes to the printing department. Typically an order is printed and shipped the next day after customer approval through the use of e-Proof.

Ok, so.... What is an e-Proof?

An e-Proof is your wording placed on the card you selected as it would appear as a finished product. I was walking through the neighborhood the other night, and as it was getting dark I realized we were getting close to one of my favorite holidays - Halloween!!!! I love the excitement of dressing up as something out of the ordinary. I love even more seeing what ideas other people have for costumes or decorations! But by far, my favorite is seeing the homemade costumes of little kids. That always gives me such a treat!

I quickly began making plans for decorating the house and preparing for trick-or-treaters. Halloween is on a Friday this year, so treats for the kids that night and a party for us adults on Saturday night! We are 8 weeks out, but I'm a firm believer that parties and social gatherings should be planned in advance to minimize stress for a fun event! (That's a trade secret! Tell everyone!)

We've got plans for decorating the driveway with Do-It-Yourself luminaries that I saw in a neighborhood driveway a few years ago. Here is a link to one version that I saw using paper bags, sand and tea lights. This looks really great lining the driveway at night!
Add some fake cobwebs, post-humorously (ha!) written tombstones, some spooky tunes, perhaps a few well placed scares (great for dad to handle!) and a few buckets of candy and we're in the trick or treat business!

For the big kids this year, we'll be hosting the annual Halloween costume party. Here is my favorite of this years adult Halloween invitations.
What sells this one for me is the 2 sided invite, with your wording on the front and a fun image of costumed characters on the back.

There are a number of other exciting and playful Halloween invitations as well, which may be just the thing for your party.

Wedding Invitation Etiquette

These are some of the common questions and comments we receive regarding wording for Wedding Invitations. We hope this helps with selecting the perfect wording for your invitation. For more assistance with all your invitation wording, check out our Suggested Wording at http://www.paperstyle.com/

You are a fiancée if you are a woman and you are a fiancé if you are a man.
A good guideline to follow is to avoid abbreviations, such as street addresses, cities or states.
Zip codes are not typically included on a wedding invitation or reception card.
Date, time and year should be spelled out.
If your wedding is before noon, it is considered morning. If it is between noon and 5:59 p.m., it is considered afternoon. Evening hours begin after 6:00 p.m.
On wedding invitations, “the honour of your presence” is reserved for ceremonies held on sanctified grounds (i.e., church, temple etc.) It is recommend to use, “the pleasure of your company” when the wedding takes place outside of religious grounds.
When sending a Reply Set with an invitation, as a courtesy to your guest, we recommend two things 1) Printing a return address on the front of the Reply Envelope and 2) Providing the envelope already stamped.
The bride or the bride’s family typically takes the replies for the wedding.
Often, the weight of a wedding invitation and it's reply cards and enclosures may alter the required postage rate. Check with your local post office before applying stamps.

Social Invitation Etiquette

Etiquette seems to be a popular topic this week. I've seen a number of things, from how to say "Adults only" and "no gifts please" to "how to properly eat corn on the cob."

Here are a few Etiquette tips that our typesetting department typically recommend, according to the Crane Blue Book with regard to Social Invitations. Check back tomorrow for Wedding Invitation Etiquette!

Social Invitations should include the Date (including the day of the week), Time and Location and are recommended in that order.
According to etiquette, shower invitations should not have registration information. However, for convenience, it has become acceptable.
As a courtesy, a name should accompany the RSVP (it’s nice to have a name when calling to RSVP ) or you can use “Regrets only” and also consider a date to reply by. The word “please” is not necessary, as it is included in RSVP.
When the guest of honor does not want to receive gifts, a nice way of saying that on an invitation is “Your presence is gift enough” or plainly “No gifts please”. Please know that your guests may be uncomfortable and still bring you a gift.
Theme parties usually require some extra planning on the guest’s part (dressing up, extra items to bring etc.) be sure to include that information on your invitation.
If you are having a shower, we suggest including the word “shower” on your invitation so that it is clear to guests, rather than stating it as a celebration or party.
Special occasion invitations (Christening, Baptism, Confirmation, Bar Mitzvah etc.) should be sent 4 weeks before the RSVP date.

As one of our most notable product vendors, Anna Griffin has long been one of our wedding product leaders with her extensive line of invitations and accessories. We were able to catch up with Anna Griffin recently and here is what she had to say!

PaperStyle - When, and why did you start Anna Griffin, Inc.?

Anna Griffin - From my experience in working for Vera Wang in New York, I fell in love with the Bridal business. Combining that love with my training in graphic design, it was only natural that I start my own company designing invitations. I started one of the first wedding invitation companies that allowed brides to make three dimensional invitations themselves without having to custom-order. I launched Anna Griffin Inc. in 1994 and we have been growing ever-since.

PaperStyle - When you are looking for inspiration, where do you turn?

Anna Griffin - To the antique patterns and documents that I have collected for years. My love of antiques and prints stems from my childhood, growing up in my great grandmothers house. She had the most beautiful pieces and I have been inspired by decorative arts created in the 1800’s ever since. The rich color and elaborate painting style is what brings most of my ideas to life.

PaperStyle - In the years you have been doing this, what have you learned that you would like to share?

Anna Griffin - I am so fortunate to be doing what I love to do. I think that it is so important to decide what truly makes you happy and do it the best that you can. My whole journey has been a learning experience. Take everything as an opportunity to grow and change and never be afraid of that change, it will only make you stronger. Remember, everything happens for a reason.

PaperStyle - When do you expect the new line of products to be available?

Anna Griffin - We had such a tremendous response to the fabric collections that we launched earlier this year, we expanded the line to include two sizes of hold everything pouches and an assortment of fashionable luggage tags. They will all be available October 1st, so they are the perfect gifts for the holiday season!

PaperStyle - Do you have a “favorite” of your new line of products?

Anna Griffin - That’s a hard one. I love all of the collections, but I have really been in the Maime mood lately. The Maime Collection is perfect for the summertime with cool and breezy patterns. Since I am always traveling, I really love my bamboo inspired laptop tote bag, it makes me feel like a chic jetsetter and I think that is fabulous!

Letters from Home

In an age of text messages and emails, we have really gotten used to the immediately gratifying written word – daily for some of us! In our lives, we’ve all probably gotten a letter once or twice. Do you remember why you received those letters? Was it for something important and special? Was it a quick thank you, or a long love letter?

So now that you’re thinking about the notes you’ve gotten, what about the reasons that you could write a note?

Thank you notes are pretty common. For wedding, shower or birthday gifts; for job interviews; and for a job well done. Those are just a few reasons for a thank you note. The real secret to thank you notes is direct and to the point, but expressive and personal. Five minutes from picking up the pen, to putting a stamp on the envelope.

Quick Thinking of You Notes: These are my favorite. A quick note, sometimes only 1 or 2 lines long, written to someone you were thinking of and wanted to share that thought with. I’ve personally written notes like this on post-it notes, the back of an envelope, napkins, a sandwich bag, and even a playing card!

Love letters are an accomplished feat. In the words of author John Donne, "More than kisses, letters mingle souls; for thus friends absent speak." If you have ever recieved one, whether an elaborate missive or a crayon written "check yes or no" passed in class, you know the special feeling of opening that note. When did you last share that feeling?

Long Distance Letters: Another opportunity to write comes to mind. We got a letter this weekend from a friend of ours who is a U.S. Marine, currently deployed overseas. On this recent deployment, we have tried to send him an occasional greeting card, a letter, or even a Facebook message when we think of him! A group of friends sent him a care package for his birthday at the end of May, with a ton of fun goodies and notes from home. He was just writing to say how thankful he was to get some mail from friends at home and that it really made him feel good and loved to have those notes. Do you know someone who is currently abroad for work, pleasure or school?

A Real American.... Typesetter?

Did you know, that the first published copies of the "Declaration of Independence" were printed on the night of July 4, 1776, by John Dunlap of Philadelphia? The surviving copies, of which there are currently 25 out of 200, are refered to as "The Dunlap Broadsides." The last auction of a "Dunlap Broadside" sold for $8.14 million dollars!!! At PaperStyle, we can really appreciate a good typeset, and the "Declaration of Independence" is one that has lasted for 232 years and been seen by millions of people around the world! Wow!

John Dunlap later printed the "Constitution of the United States of America" in his Pennsylvania newspaper in 1797. John Dunlap found himself at the center of the birth of a new nation and made the most of his opportunities to serve the cause of freedom. As a printer, soldier, and as a financier to the Revolution, he deserves to be remembered as a patriot and a man of action in a time of great danger and sacrifice. Getting it all together...

My wife is an organizer. She is naturally inclined to plan her approach to everything. Often this includes tab separated notebooks, file folders, sticky notes, color coded highlighters and/or lots of reviewing!
I am a selective organizer. There are certain things that I can be extraordinarily detailed and organized about. For me, this often includes electronic file folders, but when it makes it to paper copies – multiple piles!

When my wife and I got married last year we realized something and anyone who has ever gotten married will tell you as well, that one of the hardest things about this wonderful event is to organize all your wedding information. From colors, to flowers and dresses, to music and food – it can all be overwhelming. Trying to do it all yourself is not only a daunting task, but just plain no fun! Just remember, this is why you have friends and family in general, and bridal attendants in particular!
Your bridal attendants (yes, even the groomsmen!) are there to help make your wedding day incredibly memorable. It’s not uncommon, or even unexpected to ask them to help with specific tasks. Give them small tasks that just need to be done, but that you might not have the time to do. Arrange a to-do list for your attendants, especially as your wedding date gets closer.

One last thing: When my wife and I got married last year, we really relied on our friends to give us a needed break from wedding planning. My biggest advice I can offer a couple is to write into the schedule, “Time to Relax!” Whether it’s a movie and ice cream on the couch each week (Sunday nights at 7 during our wedding planning!), or playing Skee-ball on a Friday night with friends! Just take time to relax, have fun, and do the things that you did before the “Wedding Planning” began. I promise that you will enjoy the scheduled break!

Making sure that love never goes unnoticed

We are always super excited when we receive new style designs from our vendors, and today is no exception! We’ve recently received 17 new items from Doc Milo, and someone said “Wow. I wonder how all these artists come up with such adorable things.” Well, why not ask?!?

As an opportunity to find out more about one of our creative vendors, we caught up with Sarah Sheffer from Doc Milo and here is what she had to say!

Paperstyle: When and why did you decide to start Doc Milo?

Sarah: I wish I had a more businesslike answer but the truth is that I started the company (in 1998) because it was the single most fun thing I could think up to do. Anyone who’s ever started something from nothing will know what I mean when I say it was all just a grand adventure back then. Terrifying and exhilarating all at once. That the company has become what it has all these years later is as much a testament to the joy with which the whole enterprise was conceived as it is to the fantastic energy of not only everyone now working at Doc Milo, but also the creative spirit that drives our vendors and the end users of our papers. I think when you do what you love, you naturally draw other people to you who love what they do, and that spark just keeps getting passed back and forth and getting brighter and more fabulous for everyone involved.

Paperstyle: When you are looking for inspiration, where do you turn?

Sarah: First and foremost, I come from a family of big party throwers. Lots of cousins, lots of weddings, lots of babies...basically lots of milestones. My whole life, at every opportunity, there’s a party. So I think that the fun, fabulous quality that people so respond to in my work is really just the energy of my family, sort of channeled into ink. Nice that I get to take credit for it, but there’s a whole tribe of wonderful people and experiences and memories behind me every time I sit down to draw. Just remembering the good times we’ve had and thinking about the good times to come.

As for sheer style points? Well, my baby sister (who’s now 30, and yes, still my baby) is definitely my fashion muse - very Audrey Hepburn - she’s like the human embodiment of the word “adorable,” but in a very cool way. Because I have the world’s greatest mother, I got to spend a summer in high school studying in the fashion department at the Parsons School of Design, which was just incredible, and probably permanently firmed up fashion design as a cornerstone of inspiration for me forever. Add to that the fact that I was an architecture major at Columbia and then after college worked briefly in interior design and, well, I guess it’s safe to say you see all those influences at play in my work. Color, line, form, all of that. Just the big wide world of art and design, which is endless. And really, that’s the beauty of inspiration...that it can come from anywhere.

So I guess as far as where I “turn?” I turn all around, all the time, looking at everything I possibly can. You just never know...and that’s the fun. There are amazing people doing amazing work all over the place. If you’re open to it, the really good stuff is everywhere. It’s just about getting yourself in a place where you can be receptive and then, corny as it sounds, it sort of just appears as needed.

Paperstyle: In the years you have been doing this, what have you learned that you would like to share?

Sarah: The social stationery business is endlessly complex and fascinating, but the main thing I have learned is actually the simplest. Yes, we’re all terribly sophisticated these days. We shop over the internet. We get paperless proofs. We have overnight shipping to China or Brazil or London. But when it comes to celebrating the special occasions in our lives, we still want the same things we always have.

We want to mark the big events - weddings, births, celebrations of every kind - with a sort of emotional exclamation point. We want beauty and grace and a true sense of festivity, because at bottom, what this whole industry is about is love. What I do? It’s about helping to make sure that love never goes unnoticed.

For anyone who wants to know the secret to my business, it is just this: the closer I come to capturing pure joy on paper, the better able I am to tap into that endlessly elusive, yet immediately recognizable feeling, the better a seller I have. Because what speaks to all of us at these times in our lives is the same. It’s magic. It’s all about the magic. And, really, what else is love if not that?

Paperstyle: Do you have a favorite of your new line of invitations?

Sarah: Asking me which of my designs I like best is like asking someone which of their kids they like best. Anyone who tells you they don’t have a favorite is lying, but they’ll never tell you who it is, and neither will I. :)

When life is busy and even a little crazy at times, I like to just take a minute to pause and relax! As inconvenient as that sometimes is, taking a break is often helpful for getting refocused. I used to love to go to the zoo to see the animals and the people having a good time. It was a great opportunity for me to relax and have fun, so I could refocus on the ‘To Do List’ of life.

Looking at the weather forecast for this weekend, Atlanta is hitting the low to mid 90's all week with not a cloud in the sky! We all know what that means… Summer is here!
The time for being outside, grilling out and waiting for fireworks to burst over head is near! That’s right! July 4th, Independence Day for the United States of America is just less than a month away!

We've included a few great recipes that you might include in your cookout. When looking for fun new recipes, I enjoy using allrecipes.com for their great conversion charts. I've tried a few of these recipes, and some just looked too good not to share! All pictures are from the allrecipes.com website.

Quick Baby Back Ribs
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Cook Time: 1 Hour
Ready In: 1 Hour 15 Minutes
Yields: 10 servings

"This is an easy recipe for ribs that won't be tough at all! I tried this recipe the last time I made ribs for my family. Plenty for 9 hungry adults!"

INGREDIENTS:
2-1/2 cups mesquite chips, soaked
2-1/2 (2 pound) slabs baby back pork ribs
2-1/2 teaspoons salt
2-1/2 teaspoons freshly ground
pepper 2-1/2 teaspoons Hungarian paprika
2-1/2 teaspoons ancho chile
powder
1-1/4 teaspoons ground thyme
2-1/2 cups barbeque sauce

DIRECTIONS:
1. Prepare an outdoor grill for indirect heat - a pile of charcoal on one side, nothing under the food. Once it is going, throw some soaked mesquite woodchips on it. (You can do the same with a gas grill, just light one side at a low to medium heat.)
2. Remove the membrane from the ribs if the butcher has not already. Combine the salt, pepper, paprika, chile powder and thyme; rub onto the ribs. Cut the slab of ribs in half.
3. Place the ribs over indirect heat, and close the lid. Cook for 20 minutes, then brush with barbeque sauce. Cover, and continue cooking for an additional 30 minutes.

Baked Beans
Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Cook Time: 50 Minutes
Ready In: 1 Hour
Yields: 12 servings

"Baked beans baked - again - with pork, brown sugar, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce. My sister-in-law and I tend to race to the next helping of baked beans, so we always make extra!"

INGREDIENTS:
2 (29 ounce) cans baked beans
with pork
1 cup packed brown sugar 1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire
sauce

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. In a casserole dish, combine beans, brown sugar, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce.
3. Bake, covered, for 45 minutes or until bubbly.

Veggie Kabobs
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Cook Time: 10 Minutes
Ready In : 25 Minutes
Yields: As much as you want!

"For something quick and light on the grill, some veggie kabobs are sure to add some color and extra flavor to your plate!"

INGREDIENTS:
Colorful, sweet vegetables (We used: green peppers, red peppers, onions, mushrooms)
Grill Seasoning (We used Montreal seasoning)
Kabob Sticks

DIRECTIONS:
1. Chop vegetables into cubes / chunks
2. Brush / sprinkle with olive oil
3. Sprinkle grill seasoning
4. Wrap in foil and place on the grill
5. Grill for about 10 minutes, or until texture desired(less cook time for crisper veggies)
